Subject : The current rubbish Dump land slide that claimed the lives of 113 people in Addis Ababa is just a continuation of the regimes genocide on Amhara people.
The TPLF led regime who took an “anti Amhara” ideology to the bush in 1976, have been targeting Ethnic Amharas of Ethiopia long before they came to power in May of 1991. In late 1980’s when TPLF took control of the majority of Tigray, Amharas of Welkait Tegede were their primary targets of genocide and ethnic Cleansing. They had killed hundreds of thousands of Amharas and buried them in mass graves. The Welkait Tegede and Telemt region of Gondar and Raya Azebo of Wollo were then forcefully annexed to Tigray region in 1991. They were the target of killings, torture, forced displacement, and incarceration since then.
The Tigrean People Liberation Front (TPLF) in their inaugural document stated “the establishment of Greater Tigray republic will only be real on the graves of Amharas”. To that end TPLF had been systematically orchestrating the ethnic cleansing of Amharas from different parts of the country. They were responsible for the disappearance of 2.4 million Amharas which they admitted on their regular parliamentary meeting although independent researchers and Activists claimed the number could be as high as 5 million. They are responsible for the killings of hundreds of thousands of Amharas in different part of Oromia region including pregnant women and children. They are also responsible for forced displacement of Amharas from different parts of the country. Amharas were deliberately marginalized from any sort of political involvement despite constituting almost 40% of the Ethiopias 100,000,000 strong population. Amharas were also systematically marginalized from the countries economic growth despite being the source of the nations major economy from the export of sesame seeds, cotton and other cash crops. Amhara women of reproductive age were coerced to take injectable contraceptives and rendered infertile under the regime. In general the Amhara have been rendered the poorest, not only in Africa, but in the whole world by a documentary aired by Aljazeera English.
Victims of the recent rubbish Dump landslide (death poll trending at 113 at the time of compilation of this report ) are mostly Amharas based on a survey conducted by AAPOII. All of them were forcefully removed from their inner city residences in the capital city, Addis Ababa, without adequate compensation. They were made to settle on rubbish Dump with ‘houses’ made of recycled plastic used as a temporary shelter from the elements of the weather.
The TPLF led regime should be held accountable for this tragedy for not protecting the people they claimed have elected them as the “legitimate government”. Family members of the victim have told reporters of major media outlets that they had to pay for excavator operators to have the bodies of their beloved ones retrieved. AAPOII feels TPLF should be held accountable and the international communities and all other concerned bodies should investigate the matter. We call upon international humanitarian organizations and Western governments to stop supporting the genocidal regime so these atrocities to humanity should stop without delay.
